What to do
Carpet stains are a nightmare, but they don’t have to be. Take note of the following carpet stain removal tips at home or in the office:
- Blot out the liquids
If you have spilled wine or your kid had an accident on the carpet, use absorbent cloth or kitchen paper towels to remove excess liquid. Weigh the cloth or towel down with something heavier such as a paper weight to absorb moisture. Change paper towels as often as needed till it is dry. Put cold water on the affected area and then blot excess moisture.
- Scrape away solid material
Spills which contain solids such as tomato sauce or food cooked in butter or grease should be removed immediately. Use a spoon to scoop out excess spills. Work with paper towels to blot away the liquid. Start at the edges working your way towards the centre to avoid the spill from spreading. Repeat until there is no colour rubbing off on the paper towel or till moisture is completely removed.
- Use a cleaning solution
Once you have removed excesses, spray the area with a cleaning agent. You can use homemade solutions or commercial cleaning products. Follow the directions as instructed by the manufacturer.
If you do not have a cleaning agent on hand, you can always mix your own solutions at home or use products you have on hand. For example, club soda is great for removing blood, wine or juice stains. You can also mix one teaspoon of dishwashing liquid and a quarter teaspoon of white vinegar in warm water to get an instant carpet cleaner. Test the solution first in a hidden spot.
