Your guide to children's bed

One of the most important purchases you will make for your children is a bed. Space is often at a premium in children’s bedrooms, so it's important that you make an informed decision. This simple guie to choosing children's bed outlines some of the key factors to consider before making your purchase.

What to look for in children's beds

Safety

Safety is the most important feature in children's beds, so make sure that the bed you buy conforms to all the relevant safety standards. Make sure that any furniture you buy conforms to the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire Safety) Regulations 1988.

Bed size

You need to know what size bed you are looking for. If the child outgrows the bed, is there a younger sibling to pass it onto? Children develop and grow at an astounding rate, so if you don’t have more children to pass it onto, a bed becomes too small very quickly. That’s why there are many ‘convertible’ children’s beds on the market which grow with the child, and are easily adaptable as the child outgrows them.

Style

The style of the bed may seem unimportant, but it is desirable to have a bed which fits the décor of the child’s room. As they grow older, many children want to have a bed that represents their favourite cartoon characters, TV shows, films or maybe a ‘car’ bed. Many modern houses lack storage space, but many children’s beds have inbuilt storage underneath. As children grow older and safety becomes less of an issue, you may choose ‘bunk beds’ or you may be able to buy a ‘high sleeper’ which gives you more floor space and makes the room more versatile.

Room measurements

It is imperative that you take measurements of the room before deciding which bed to buy to ensure that there are no nasty surprises when the bed is delivered.

Material

The more basic models of children's bed are generally supported by metal or softwood frames, while more expensive alternatives can often use attractive hard woods such as mahogany or teak and contain accessories such as drawers or shelves. Hardwood beds will generally last longer and maintain their attractive appearance for many years so it may be worth considering spending the extra money to get a better return on your investment.
