How to clean a mattress without dampening the material

When was the last time you cleaned your mattress? The average person spends about a third of their lives sleeping, which means you need to clean and freshen your bed regularly. If you have kids who soil the bed at night, cleaning the mattress is a necessary ritual you have to do often. Here’s a quick guide on how to clean a mattress and remove stains and soiling without using cleaning chemical or dampening the material.

Things you will need for the task

You will need a few things to clean a mattress without dampening the material:

1. Some bicarbonate of soda (or baking soda as you may know it)

2. A sieve or big dusting tin like large salt shaker

3. A vacuum cleaner

Step 1: Dust the mattress with bicarbonate of soda

Move your mattress to an appropriate area away from walls and other furniture. Make sure you can access the mattress from all sides. Pour a small amount of bicarbonate of soda into a sieve and use the sieve to sprinkle the soda all over the mattress. Apply more soda on areas that have the most soiling or stains.

If you have a dusting tin like big sugar or salt shaker, fill the shaker with bicarbonate of soda and sprinkle liberally on the mattress. Aim to cover the entire surface of the mattress with a good dusting. Don’t worry if you accidentally put too much soda on. Just spread the soda around evenly.

Step 2: Let the soda do its magic

Once you have liberally sprinkled the bicarbonate of soda on the mattress, let the soda do its magic. Leave the mattress for several hours to allow the soda to act, preferably a whole day if possible. Bicarbonate of soda draws and absorbs moisture, dirt and odours out of the fabric of the mattress, leaving your mattress clean, fresh and free from visible stains.

Step 3: Remove the soda with a vacuum cleaner

Finally, after you have allowed the mattress to settle for some time, use a vacuum cleaner to suck up all the soda from the surface of the mattress, as well as from the inside of the mattress. Make sure you vacuum clean the mattress thoroughly so that you don’t end up puffing in soda particles every time you use the mattress.

Voila! The mattress is now clean and fresh again!

If you are not happy with the result, repeat the cleaning procedure until you get desired results. Admittedly, some stains may require you to use more powerful cleaning products to remove the stains. This procedure is, however, one of the quickest and most effective methods to clean a mattress at home without dampening the material no matter the mattress size. You may also use the method to clean other soft furnishing, such as chairs and sofas.
