How to use bleach in the laundry properly

Bleach is a chemical agent that whitens and sterilises clothes. It is also used to remove stains and bad odours from clothing. A bleach solution can be sodium hypochlorite or hydrogen peroxide. We show you how to use bleach in the laundry correctly for whiter and cleaner clothes and fabrics.

Guide to using bleach

Ever wonder how to make your whites brighter and how to remove stains from your favourite jersey? Bleach is the solution to all those problems whether you just want to keep your office shirt white or to clean off the wine spill on your dress from dinner last night. Here are tips how to use bleach in the laundry:

  • Using the washing machine dispenser

Nowadays, washing machines have their own bleach dispenser in addition to compartments for detergents and fabric softener. Check out where yours is located so you can put bleach in the correct dispenser. This makes it easy to use bleach safely and properly.

Remember, for best results, you should only add the bleach after the machine has been filled with water. Also, keep in mind hot water dissolves the bleach faster so for effective results, add clothes to be washed 5 minutes after the wash cycle starts. This ensures bleach is well integrated into the system for whiter and sparkling results. If you have a front loading machine, you can add the bleach after clothes are thoroughly soaked.

  • Machines with no dispenser

Even if your washing machine has no dispenser, you can add bleach to the load of clothes you are washing. Again, make sure you are using the hot wash cycle to ensure the bleach is dissolved well in the water and for best results. Wait at least 5 to 10 minutes when the clothes are soaked in hot water before adding the bleach and water mixture. If you are unsure about the proportions, consult the instructions leaflet of the bleach product.

You can also fill a basin with hot water, add bleach and then soak clothes. Although this will be a little more extra work, you are at least sure the bleach penetrates the clothes and will remove stains and unpleasant odours from fabrics before doing a load of wash.

Other tips

Avoid spots on your clothes when you know how to use bleach in the laundry. If you are trying to get rid of tough stains, you can pre-soak clothes in a basin of water and bleach. Rub the affected spots and then rinse abundantly with clear water to avoid yellow spots on clothes. Note repeated use of bleach can weaken fabrics.
