Unfortunately, some machines have probably more lights than inside the cockpit of an airplane. It can become very confusing to know which are the right buttons to push.

First off, after unpacking the machine, take time to go through the user manual. But don't worry, symbols are often accompanied by words. One of the first symbols you should know is the start button. This can also be the pause or resume button. Thus, if you forgot a sock which has somehow fallen on the floor, you can add it in the machine.

You can also lock the machine for safety reasons such as preventing young children from fiddling with the buttons or ending up in the machine. Often, it is also possible to delay the onset of the washing cycle like when you are not at home or just after you leave the house.

Next, you have to familiarise yourself with the various programmes on the machine. It is also prudent to read the labels on the clothing you are washing to make sure you are using the correct cycles. For example, cottons, synthetics, delicates, wools and blankets require specific temperatures. You can use heavy, normal or a quick wash. In some machines, it is also possible to adapt the programme according to how hard the water is or how soiled the clothes are.

Ensure that you follow manufacturer's advise when it comes to temperature settings. Depending on the machine you have at home, you can choose cold, 30°C, 40°C, 60°C and 90°C degrees (sanitary wash). If in doubt, use cold/delicate wash if you don't want to shrink your favourite jumper or your hubby's office shirt.

Spin settings are also different from a low of 400rpm to a high of 1600rpm. Depending on the fabrics, you have to adjust the settings. Lower rpms mean less water is collected from the clothes but also less creases. When you use the higher spin settings, your clothes are nearly dry and will save you energy drying them in the dryer.
