Reasons why your refrigerator is not cooling enough

If your refrigerator is not cooling enough, there are many probable reasons why it is in this condition. Before you call a technician to take a look at it, browse through our troubleshooting guide to make sure that it is not something you can fix yourself. We tell you the possible reasons why your refrigerator is not cooling enough.

Practical hints

The ideal temperature of a refrigerator should be from 3ºC to 5ºC for hygiene and sanitation purposes. If you feel that your refrigerator is not cooling enough, do the following:

  • Measure the temperature

There are some refrigerators which are equipped with a thermometer so it is pretty easy to see if the fridge temps are around these values. Of course, opening the door often also affects the temperature bringing it higher. If your kitchen appliance is not equipped with a thermometer, invest in one so it is easy to keep tabs of the temperature reducing food spoilage.

  • Check the thermostat

You never know if you or one of your kids accidentally changed the settings in the fridge from low to high. If this is the case, make sure that the dial inside the fridge is set at the desired setting to cool stuff inside.

  • Do a spot check of the ref seals

Make sure that the seals around the fridge are tight and there are no loose ones. For the ref to achieve its maximum cooling capacity, there should be no hanging gaskets.

  • Assess the food load

Overloading the fridge with tons of food, jars, dairy and other perishables also contribute to higher temperatures. Make sure that there is a reasonable amount of food in the fridge. Check your refrigerator’s contents and throw items which have turned bad. Check expiry dates and best of all, buy only what you need for a few days instead of stuffing food in the fridge which can become stale quickly.

Other tips

There are other reasons why your refrigerator is not cooling enough such as an obstruction which hinders the flow of air inside the ref. If you put large containers at the back, make sure that they are not blocking the circulation of cold air. Also, verify that the condenser coil is not dirty. Before cleaning it, unplug the appliance to avoid electric shocks.
