Create your own themed rooms!

Themed rooms aren't only for hotels, and they don't have to be tacky either! This guide will show you how to create your own tasteful themed rooms that can give your home the "wow" factor! Remember, your home is probably where you spend most of your time - so make the most of it and let your imagination run wild!

What is a themed room?

A themed room is one that is decorated around a central idea or concept. This concept can be anything you choose, from fairytales to beaches to South America. Some top ideas are:

  • Birds of paradise
  • Day at the seaside
  • Country cottage
  • Forest
  • Football
  • Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter
  • 1950s

Which rooms can be themed?

As you can see, the choices for themed rooms are potentially endless! This means that you can probably think of a theme to suit any room in your house - perhaps princesses for your daughter's room, Mexico for the kitchen, beaches for your bathroom or Victorian for the dining room...

What's the best way to choose a theme?

The best way to choose a theme is to inject some of your personality into it. Where are you at your happiest? What are your passions? Where are your favourite holiday destinations? If, for example, you love to spend your holidays in the USA, you might want to introduce some Americana into your home!

Likewise, avoid anything that you're not passionate about. Never select a theme because it's currently fashionable or trendy - you'll soon tire of it.

And, of course, it's not a good idea to give any room a makeover without consulting the other people who use it.

How to keep themed rooms tasteful

Tacky can be fun, but it can also date a room and go out of fashion quickly. A good golden rule is that unless it's a child's bedroom that you are decorating, keep the theme subtle. A colour palette and a couple of well chosen ornaments or wall hangings are usually enough to invoke a theme without going OTT.
